Active Ingredient: The active ingredient present in Toprol-XL is Metoprolol succinate.

Drug Information: Toprol-XL is a very effective and safe beta-blocker, is prescribed for chest pain, high blood pressure, heart failure and fast and irregular heartbeat (cardiac arrhythmias).

How it works?

Metoprolol helps in slowing of heart rate and relaxing of blood vessels by blocking the beta-1 adrenergic receptor in the heart and peripheral blood vessels thereby lowering blood pressure. Metoprolol decreases the oxygen requirement which can be used in long-term management of heart attacks caused by restricted blood flow to the heart.

How to take Toprol XL?

In case of Hypertension:

  • Adult: 25-100 mg daily as a single dose, depending on response. This medicine takes 1 to 2 weeks for full effect to be observed.
  • Po- Adults: 10 mg daily as a single dose.
  • Children: <30kg- 5 mg once a day; > 30 kg: 10 mg once a day.

In case of missed dose:

If, by chance, you miss out taking a dose of this tablet, take it as soon as possible. On the other hand, if it is roughly the time for your next dosage, you may omit the dose that you forgot taking. Never take two doses to make up for a skipped one.

What are the precautions that must be kept in mind before taking Toprol-XL tablet?

  • Toprol-XL tablet may bring about dizziness or drowsiness, thus it is suggested not to drive a car or operate machinery and get up slowly from bed while taking this medication.
  • The medicine is known to have a serious effect on the blood platelet counts; as a result it is better to avoid injury or bruising.
  • Monitor blood pressure regularly while taking this medication.
  • Medicines must not use the medicine which is past the expiry date.
  • Patient may develop with increased risk of allergic reaction, if it so consult with your doctor.
