Active Ingredient: The active ingredient present in Mirapex is Pramipexole.

Drug Information: Mirapex is the trade name for medication, Pramipexole. It is indicated in the treatment of signs of primary Parkinson’s disease in adults.

How does Mirapex work?

Pramipexole belongs to a class of drugs called dopamine agonists that are known to work by stimulating the dopamine receptors present in the brain which as a result triggers nerve impulses in the brain that assist to regulate body movements.

How to use Mirapex?

Pramipexole must be used only as per the directions by your doctor. Take this tablet by mouth before or after food, and must be taken at the same time each day. This medicine must be taken with a full glass of water. Swallow Mirapex tablet as such without breaking or crushing. Continue to take the medication even if you feel well. Avoid skipping any dose. During the initial week, the normal recommended daily dose is 0.26 mg. The dose can be enhanced every 5-7 days as per the directions of your doctor until your signs get controlled (maintenance dose). The general maintenance dose is 1.05 mg per day.

What to do in case of missed dose?

If you miss a dose of Mirapex tablet, you can consume it as soon as possible. If it is nearly the time for your subsequent dose, you can leave the dose you missed and go back to your normal dosing plan. Do not take two doses at once.

Side effects:

Do not abruptly discontinue the use of Mirapex without discussing with your physician. Side effects may take place. They may comprise:

Drug-Drug Interactions:

Inform your physician if you plan on taking Mirapex tablet while taking any of the following drugs:

  • Other drugs that make you drowsy or hazy
  • Mexiletine (for treating irregular heartbeats, a condition called ventricular arrhythmia)
  • Amantadine (used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease)
  • Quinine (used for preventing painful night-time leg cramps and for the treatment of a type of malaria)
  • Cisplatin (to treat various types of cancer)

What are the safety measures to be implemented while taking Mirapex tablet?

  • Do not use Mirapex tablet if you are allergic to Pramipexole or to any of the constituents in the medication.
  • Patients with low blood pressure (a fall in blood pressure on standing up) must also avoid the use of this drug.
  • If you have uncontrolled muscle movement (dyskinesia), then also Mirapex is not safe for you.
  • If you have a habit of consuming alcohol, then also do not use this drug.
  • If you have an issue of psychotic problem (for example, equivalent to the symptoms of schizophrenia), then also avoid the intake of this medication.
