Why Esbriet Medication is Prescribed?
Pirfenidone (Esbriet) is given to patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis – scarring of lungs due to some unknown reasons. It is exactly not known as to how this medicine works to treat this disease.
How Should Esbriet be Used?
The medicine comes in capsule form which can be taken by mouth. Typically it is taken three times a day with food. The doctor will start by putting the patient on a low dose initially and will gradually increase the dose in two weeks. Take this medicine at the same time everyday and do not take more or less of it; take exactly as directed by the doctor.
What Should I do if I Forget a Dose?
A missed dose should be taken as soon as you remember it. But do not take if it is already time for your next dose. Also, it you have missed taking Pirfenidone (Esbriet) for 14 or more days, talk to your doctor who can guide you how to restart from a low dose and gradually increase the dose over a period of two weeks.
What Side Effects can Esbriet Cause?
Taking Pirfenidone (Esbriet) may have side effects such as:
- Weight loss
- Stomach ache or joint pain
Some severe side effects include loss of appetite, strange bleeding, weakness, pain in the upper right stomach, change is the colour of urine, eyes or skin turning yellow or hoarseness.
- Inform you doctor if you have any allergies. If you have or have had liver or kidney disease, talk to your doctor.
- Also, in case you use tobacco products tell your doctor as cigarette smoking may decrease the effectiveness of this medicine.
- If you are pregnant or planning to get pregnant or are breastfeeding, inform your doctor beforehand.
