PRESCRIPTION REQUIRED | BRAND NOT AVAILABLE

Alternate Brand Name: Cosmegen, Dacilon

Dactinomycin is a cancer medication that interferes with the growth and spread of cancer cells in the body.

Recommendation:.

The recommended dose of 15 mcg/kg/day or 400 to 600 mcg/m2/day intravenously for 5 days as a part of a combination regimen.

Dactinomycin is used to treat different types of cancers that affect the kidneys, uterus, testicles, bones, muscles, joints, and soft tissues. Dactinomycin is also used to treat solid tumors.

Dactinomycin is also used in combination with other medications to treat certain types of testicular cancer and Ewing's sarcoma (a type of cancer in bones or muscles). Dactinomycin is also used alone or in combination with other medications to treat gestational trophoblastic tumors (a type of tumor that forms inside a woman's uterus while she is pregnant). Dactinomycin may also be used to treat certain types of cancerous tumors that are located in a specific area of the body. Dactinomycin is a type of antibiotic that is only used in cancer chemotherapy. It works by slowing or stopping the growth of cancer cells in your body.

Precautions:

Avoid getting this medicine on your clothes. Destroy any clothing the medicine has leaked onto if an accidental spill occurs.

Avoid being near people who are sick or have infections. Tell your doctor at once if you develop signs of infection.

Do not receive a "live" vaccine while using dactinomycin, and avoid coming into contact with anyone who has recently received a live vaccine. There is a chance that the virus could be passed on to you. Live vaccines include measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), rotavirus, typhoid, yellow fever, varicella (chickenpox), zoster (shingles), and nasal flu (influenza) vaccine.

Breastfeeding:

There are no data on the excretion of dactinomycin into human milk. Because many drugs are excreted into human milk and because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants from dactinomycin, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into the account the importance of the drug to the mother.
