Adenosine is an antiarrhythmic and a nucleoside. It works to treat irregular heartbeat by slowing the electrical conduction in the heart, slowing heart rate, or normalizing heart rhythm. It helps during a stress test of the heart by improving blood flow to the heart.

Recommendation:

The recommended doses is 3.5 mg as rapid intravenous bolus, second dose is repeated after 2 mts if first dose fails to abort the attack of PSVT. It is given 6 mg rapidly intravenously, If attack still persists, give third dose of 12 mg rapidly intravenously

It is a physiological substance present normally in the body. It is one of the drug of choice for paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.

Breastfeeding:

Moderately safe: No studies have been conducted in breastfeeding women, however there is possibility of ill effect to the breastfed infants; or studies conducted in breastfeeding women show minimal non-threatening side effects to the infants. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.
