Ertapenem is an antibiotic that fights bacteria.

Ertapenem is used to treat severe infections of the skin, lungs, stomach, pelvis, and urinary tract. It is also used to prevent infection in people having certain types of surgery.


The recommended dose of 1 gram IV or IM once daily for 5 to 14 days

Ertapenem is a carbapenem antibiotic. It works by killing sensitive bacteria.

Treating moderate to severe infections caused by certain bacteria. It is also used to prevent infection after certain types of surgery. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.


Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, stop using ertapenem and call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.


Ertapenem is excreted into human milk. The effects in the nursing infant are unknown. The manufacturer recommends that caution be used when administering ertapenem to nursing women.
