Colistimethate is an antibiotic that fights bacteria.

Colistimethate is used to treat infections caused by bacteria.


The recommended dose of 2.5 to 5 mg/kg/day IM or IV in 2 to 4 divided doses, depending on severity of infection

Maximum dose: 5 mg/kg/day

Colistimethate is an antibiotic. It works by killing sensitive bacteria. Treating infections caused by certain bacteria. To reduce the development of drug-resistant bacteria and maintain the effectiveness of Colistimethate for Injection, USP and other antibacterial drugs, Colistimethate for Injection, USP should be used only to treat or prevent infections that are proven or strongly suspected to be caused by bacteria. Colistimethate sodium is a surface active agent which penetrates into and disrupts the bacterial cell membrane.


This medicine may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or bloody, stop using colistimethate and call your doctor. Do not use anti-diarrhea medicine unless your doctor tells you to.


Colistimethate is excreted into human milk in small amounts (milk-to-plasma ratio 0.17 to 0.18). The possibility of bowel flora modification and interference with culture results should be considered. The manufacturer recommends that caution be used when administering colistimethate to breast-feeding women.
