Artesunate is a most versatile artemisinin derivative given either, orally, by intravenous infusion, intramuscularly or rectally. The antimalarial effect result primarily from dihydroartemisinin a metabolite which rapidly disappears from plasma with half life of about 45 minutes. Little or none of the administered drug or dihydroartemisinin is recovered from urine. It acts rapidly upon asexual erythrocytic stages of P. Vivax and chloroquine sensitive, Chloroquine resistant and multidrug resistant strains of P. Falciparum.

Recommendation:

The recommended doses 100 mg BD orally followed by 50mg OD for 4 days and in children 4 mg/kg once on first day and 2mg/kg daily for next 4 days orally. In emergency treatment the dose is 120mgon first dayi.m./i.v. Follownd by 60mg i.m./i.v. Daily for 4 days.

Severe malaria including cerebral malaria and as a second line treatment in chloroquine resistant falciparum malaria.

Precautions:

Alert your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Breastfeeding:

Moderately safe: No studies have been conducted in breastfeeding women, however there is possibility of ill effect to the breastfed infants; or studies conducted in breastfeeding women show minimal non-threatening side effects to the infants. Drugs should be given only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the infant. Patients should follow the advice of the doctor regarding its use.
